Michael R. Fletcher is a Richmond, Virginia–based writer, illustrator, and graphic artist whose work explores faith, history, family, and the moments that shape who we are. With more than forty years of writing experience, he brings a seasoned voice and storyteller’s instinct to everything from children’s books to commentary and creative art.

Michael is the author and illustrator of several children’s books, including Cat and Pig: A Story of Friendship and Cat and Pig: Good News in the Barn, along with My Book of ABCs. His work reflects a passion for meaningful storytelling—often rooted in real-life inspiration—and a desire to create art that engages both children and adults. In addition to his books, he produces printable artwork and creative resources inspired by faith, American history, and everyday life.

His writing career spans journalism, blogging, and editorial work. He is a former editor of Bearing Drift Magazine and continues to contribute there, with previous writing featured in the Richmond Bible Examiner, Richmond Pro-Life Examiner, and Richmond Performing Arts Examiner. He has also authored the book How to Break into the Event Planning Business. For more than a decade, he has written at his blog, The Write Side of My Brain, offering reflections on culture, faith, and public life.

Michael’s creative work extends to the stage. His original script, Clean Dry Socks: Diary of a Doughboy, premiered in Richmond in 2018. A longtime participant in the local arts community, he is a member of the Richmond Playwright’s Forum and a former Managing Director of Chamberlayne Actors Theatre.

Beyond the arts, Michael has spent over thirty years in politics and public policy, including more than twenty-five years serving the Commonwealth of Virginia. His professional experience also includes leadership as Director of Meetings and Conventions for a national association of state legislators, where he coordinated major national events, including White House briefings and conferences with thousands of attendees. He was appointed by Governor Bob McDonnell to serve a four-year term on the Virginia Board of Counseling.

A graduate of Asbury University with a degree in Communications Arts (with studies in drama and music), Michael also holds a Certificate in Christian Education from Asbury Theological Seminary and a Biblical Training Certificate from the Christian Counseling and Training Center. His faith has been a consistent influence throughout his life and work, including nearly two decades of involvement in music and fine arts ministry, missions leadership, and community outreach.

Michael has also served in numerous leadership roles, including President of the Asbury University Alumni Association Board of Directors, and as a board member and president of several community organizations in Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Through his writing and art, Michael seeks to create work that invites reflection, encourages creativity, and tells stories that matter—whether through a children’s book, a stage script, or a simple piece of printable art.
